Whereas the Closure procedure (and other alternative treatments) are used to treat the underlying
condition of venous reflux, other procedures are often used to treat visible spider and varicose veins and provide temporary relief. Spider veins are small, thin veins that lie close to the surface of the skin.
Cosmetic Laser Treatment
In cosmetic laser treatment, laser energy is directed at small visible veins to heat and close them
so they can no longer be seen.
Treatment of unwanted leg veins at Edmond Laser Institute
with the Laserscope Lyra™ Laser.
We are pleased to offer a revolutionary new laser treatment that can quickly and safely eliminate
unsightly leg veins, spider veins and broken capillaries up to 4mm in diameter.
What are the Benefits?
Our advanced technology minimizes the redness and bruising normally associated with traditional
treatments. Best of all, our technology allows us to treat people of any ethnic origin and skin type including tanned skin.
How does it work?
The laser energy is absorbed by the pigment in your blood and collapses the unwanted vein. The
laser energy is delivered through a hand-held device with a cooling tip that protects your skin.
When will you see results?
The appearance of leg veins will dramatically fade or completely disappear during the treatment.
Some vessels may show temporary swelling that will subside after a few hours to a few days. The redness of the treated vessels will gradually disappear as the healing process occurs. This may take between two and eight weeks.
How often can you have it done?
Most patients see excellent improvements after just two treatments. Everyone responds
differently to treatments, with some needing only one treatment and others requiring a third treatment. You can optimize your results by closely following the post treatment instructions. The usual treatment interval is eight weeks.
Are there any side effects?
Immediately following the procedure you may experience some redness in the treated area. The
redness usually dissipates within one to three days. Also, Although it is not the intended purpose of this particular treatment, hair growth may be impaired in the treated area.
How long does it take?
Most treatments will take between 15-30 minutes depending on the size of the area to be treated.
Prescribed topical anesthetics should be applied 30-90 minutes before the treatment time (this is greatly encouraged to increase your comfort).
Compression Stockings
Initial therapy may involve the use of compression stockings or leg elevation. Compression
stockings squeeze the leg from the ankle to the upper calf or thigh, applying greater pressure to the lower leg than the upper leg, thereby reducing blood pooling, swelling and pain. Both leg elevation and compression stockings involve inconvenient lifestyle modifications and, as a result, independent studies have shown that patient compliance is poor.
Sclerotherapy
In sclerotherapy, a chemical solution is injected into small or medium-sized veins near the skin
surface causing them to become inflamed and eventually close. Sclerotherapy treatment often requires multiple injections per visit to the doctor and several visits may be necessary before the veins disappear.
Phlebectomy
Phlebectomy involves surgically removing medium to larger varicose veins near the skin surface
by inserting a surgical instrument with a hook into small incisions in the skin and pulling veins out in segments. The procedure is often repeated 10 to 20 times per leg until all visible varicose veins have been removed. Phlebectomy is performed either as a stand alone procedure or in conjunction with saphenous vein treatment. |
